Application Note: Conductivity for Media Separation Control

In some processes in the Food & Beverage industry conductivity is measured to control the separation of two liquids with different conductivity values. One example is the measurement of conductivity of beer and water in the beer filler machine.

Benefits
By using conductivity measuring system manual control of the media separation by using a sight glass is avoided and the process can be automated resulting in a minimization of loss of media, reduced labor cost and increased process safety and reliability.

Process
In the final process of beer production beer is filled in bottles or cans. The operation process is shown above in figure 1, and is based on a CO2 atmosphere with a pressure up to 6 bars that pushes the product (beer) to the bottle. During the CIP (Cleaning-In-Place) process, cleaning solution and water is circulating in the machine and in the pipes that bring beer from the production area to the packaging. By the time that the final wash cycle of CIP ends, the pipes and filling machine are completely filled with water. When the production starts...
